The world of ideas starts with the senses. At Leelanau, we celebrate each one. Our curriculum integrates hands-on experiences in every subject. And gaining knowledge in more than one way isn’t just fun–it’s interesting.
When a student kayaks down the Crystal River, she might not know it yet, but she’s already learning about self-reliance, balance, even physics. Later, she wades the same river with her biology class; she’s learning how to identify species, how salmon eggs hatch, how to imagine life as an invertebrate. What about the chemistry of the river? The effect of snowfall, rainfall, pollution? With her humanities classmates, she wonders how early inhabitants found food here, how the industrial revolution changed the landscape. She’s mastering scientific techniques, inquiring on her own, connecting experience with ideas.
