Students who possess sound academic potential but who struggle to
keep pace without daily, specialized instructional assistance can
enroll in the LRC (Learning Resource Center) program. The fundamental
objective of this program is to help students compensate, manage
and overcome their learning or organizational difficulties using
a variety of time management and study skill techniques. Helping
a student identify how s/he learns most effectively is vital to
academic success. In addition, a cornerstone to this program is
teaching students self-advocacy strategies and self-directed, successful
study habits.
Emphasis is placed on organizational skills, learning
strategies, and reading comprehension skills, as well as remediation
and development of writing strategies and mathematical expression.
Teachers in the LRC program use the University of Kansas SIM (Strategic
Instruction Model) program, Mel Levine’s Schools Attuned model,
and other research-based instructional strategies in their
work with each, individual student enrolled in this program. The
students are assessed yearly so that an appropriate accommodation
plan can be created and implemented to measure progress in their
academic efforts.
