Financial Assistance

The Leelanau School offers financial assistance to approximately one third of its student body each year. As Leelanau is committed to a strong financial aid program, the school seeks students from families committed to using their own resources to make a Leelanau School education their top priority. Leelanau expects each family to evaluate their financial resources to meet a fair portion of the cost of attending The Leelanau School. Our goal is to act in partnership with each family to find the resources that will allow you to enroll your child. Please find below the instructions for applying for financial aid.

Instructions for Applying for Financial Assistance

To ensure adequate time to process all of the information necessary to evaluate a family's financial situation and a timely response from The Leelanau School, we ask that the following forms be forwarded to the Office of Admission by March 1, 2011. Please note the original copy of the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) must be sent directly to School & Student Services by NAIS (SSS). A copy of the PFS plus other required forms are to be sent to The Leelanau School.

Required Forms

1. The Leelanau School Application for Financial Assistance: This one page form allows you to provide our office with any additional information that may not be required by SSS. This may include documentation of a drastic change in financial earnings, medical expenses, etc.

2. Parents Financial Statement (PFS): This form is published by School & Student Services by NAIS. It can be filled out online or in paper form. Anyone wishing to be considered for financial assistance must submit a PFS to SSS by February 28, 2011. Please read carefully the general information section on the front of the PFS before following the instructions for completing the form. Failure to follow these directions may cause your request for financial assistance to be delayed or possibly denied. If you file this document through the mail, please retain two copies; one to send to The Leelanau School and one for your records.

3. Federal Income Tax Return(s) with all schedules & W2s: A signed copy of your most recent Form 1040 statement of federal income tax along with all attached schedules and copies of your W2s are required in order for The Leelanau School to render a financial aid decision.

4. Special or Unusual Circumstances: If you own a business or a farm, you must complete the "Business/Farm Statement", (which is available online on the NAIS website at http://sss.nais.org/parents/ or by calling SSS at 800.344.8328) and submit it directly to The Leelanau School, not SSS. In considering applications for financial assistance, the matter of divorce or separation of parents can be a difficult one. The Leelanau School must consider the assets and earnings potential of both natural parents, if living, before making any decision, and the School may not be bound by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for education expenses. If either parent has remarried, assets and earning potential of the stepparent will be considered.

When families submit late or incomplete applications, those applications cannot be considered along with those applications that are submitted correctly and on time. Due to the demand for financial assistance, The Leelanau School cannot guarantee that all candidates who apply or qualify for financial aid will receive assistance.
