ALISON STOW Class of 2000
Marking the award ceremony upon completion of teacher-training workshop in Bamako, Mali.

Life since graduating from Leelanau (Class of 2000) has been a rich one! As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I spent 27 months in Ghana, learned sign language as I went, and lived and worked at a residential school of 360 deaf children, ages 5-22.

Then I was transferred to a 5 month position to work as a teacher-trainer in American Sign Language at a deaf school in Mali. In spite of many cultural differences, campus life reminded me in many ways of Leelanau, as both were rich educational and social environments for students! I can truly say that my zest for various cultures and international living was first born of many relationships from my Leelanau days; incredible friends from around the world, and teachers who value diversity and holistic education... This is what I carry from Leelanau to this day!
