Welcome from Director of Student Life

JD Friley Deciding to have your student attend a boarding school is a very important and often emotional experience for families. The department of Student Life works to make this transition easier for both students and their parents.

Our current families at The Leelanau School consider our work in Residential Life as a partnership in teaching their children how to be members of a larger community. Our ultimate goal is finding the environment that can best meet a student's needs and allow them to grow in many ways to fulfill his or her potential. To accomplish this goal, we must look at the whole student. Their education needs to address all of the facets of their growth and development.

Our school works in a collaborative effort to support, address, and create ways for each student to identify their challenges and use their strengths in constructive ways. This collaborative approach necessitates a community which INCLUDES parents, and requires communication with all of those who work with your student. This degree of individualization develops in our classrooms with smaller numbers of students, through experiential methodologies which use "hands-on" and active-learning approaches.

Campus life presents numerous opportunities for learning. Life skills can range from daily wellness issues of hygiene, nutrition, laundry, and organization to more interpersonal and intrapersonal goals of problem solving, conflict-resolution, value-quests, and developing one's own creed.
